Tourism Development in Bromo-Tengger and Semeru: Towards Sustainability and Responsibility

The Bromo-Tengger and Semeru areas in East Java are one of the favorite places for tourism in Indonesia. Located within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area, this place offers extraordinary natural panoramas and deep spiritual experiences.
To improve the quality of tourism, this area has been made one of the Super Priority Tourism Destinations by the Indonesian Government, and its development will later be regulated through the National Tourism Destination Master Plan (RIPDN) document.
The following are a number of notes for developing tourism destinations in the Bromo-Tengger and Semeru areas. First, strengthening visitor management (Visitor Management Plan) needs to be carried out to support conservation and avoid overtourism.
Second, tourism development in this area needs to consider aspects of security, safety, cleanliness and a sustainable environment.
For example, attractions and amenities must have permission from the government, permits are granted by the government or regional government, and inspections must be carried out regarding the durability/security of the property in accordance with applicable regulations/standards.
Third, the preservation of local culture needs to be preserved along with tourism development. Fourth, disaster mitigation is needed. Because, this tourist location is a disaster-prone area. Therefore, a competent mitigation plan is very necessary.
Fifth, development plans and tourist projections need to consider the carrying capacity of the environment. Another issue that needs attention is the diversification of attractions by adapting to the market and paying attention to sustainability issues.
The development of tourism products in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park as a main destination through the development of certain themes needs to be considered. In order to provide tourists with a choice of destination types and destinations as well as expand the scope of market segments and strive to increase the length of stay of tourists.
The concept of tourism destination development is based on sustainable tourism development with an ecotourism product concept approach by slowly changing mass tourism where it is currently occurring, towards responsible tourism where tourism development prioritizes responsibility for the environment and community economic growth.
