Minister Suharso Reveals Government’s Commitment to Overcoming Poverty

Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Suharso Monoarfa expressed the Indonesian government’s commitment to overcoming poverty. This was revealed by the Minister when attending a joint working meeting with Committee IV DPD RI, the Minister of Finance and the Governor of Bank Indonesia, Tuesday (11/06/2024).
The Minister said that the government was committed to continuing to reduce the poverty rate in Indonesia until it reached 0% by 2045. According to him, this target had been included in the short, medium and long term planning documents.
In the short term, the poverty reduction target is contained in the draft Government Work Plan (RKP) for 2025. In that document, the Minister explained that the government is targeting the poverty level to be in the range of 7.0 to 8.0%.
In the medium term, the poverty reduction target is contained in the draft National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025-2029. According to him, poverty in 2029 is targeted to be in the range of 4.5 to 5.0%.
The target for reducing poverty in the long term is stated in the draft National Long Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045. in the document, the government targets the poverty rate in 2045 to be in the range of 0.5 to 0.8%.
To achieve the poverty target, the Minister revealed a number of factors that would have a significant influence on reducing poverty levels.
The first factor is the accuracy of the program’s targets. This condition must be addressed using integrated data through social and economic registration as well as activities that can reach vulnerable communities.
Not only that, the Minister also emphasized the importance of program improvements which can be carried out by integrating and converging social protection and empowerment programs.
The second factor is the setting of adaptive social protection programs. The third factor is the development of a care economy, especially for vulnerable groups, such as people with disabilities and the elderly. Fourth, graduation of social assistance programs.
The final factor that will accelerate poverty reduction is improving governance. This condition needs to be addressed by improving synergy and coordination between institutions, strengthening regulations in the central and regional governments and managing complaints from the public.
