Minister Suharso Mentions Productivity as Key in Driving Economic Growth
Increasing labour productivity is key in driving high and inclusive economic growth. This was conveyed by Minister of National Development Planning Suharso Monoarfa when opening the Annual Conference on Sustainable Development Goals 2024, Monday (07/10/2024).
The Minister said that Indonesia’s Total Factor Productivity is still in a low position compared to other countries. However, she is optimistic that Indonesia’s labour productivity can be improved with quality education.
According to him, quality education can anticipate skill changes by up to 44%. In his speech, the Minister also highlighted the huge potential of green jobs.
”By 2045, we are targeting an additional 15.3 million workers in the green sector. The green sector will continue to grow in line with our commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 31.89% in accordance with the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (ENDC),” said the Minister.
”In the future, the younger generation will play an important role through education, competency development and job skills in driving sustainable green economic growth, innovation and digitalisation,” he added.
In addition to the above, the Minister also explained several successful initiatives in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and has been recognised through the SDGs Action Award.
The first is IPB University, which launched the Sekolah Peternak Rakyat programme. This initiative has successfully empowered farmers in the village by applying the circular economy principle.
Second, Aruna Indonesia. It has made a significant impact on the welfare of small-scale fishermen. Through the provision of a fair and transparent market, Aruna not only protects fishermen but also provides education on sustainable fisheries practices.
Third, Nara Kreatif. Through its Equivalency School programme it has reached out to vulnerable communities, providing access to obtain equivalency certificates. With this diploma, they open up opportunities to get better jobs, thus improving their quality of life.
”These good practices demonstrate a strong commitment to achieving the SDGs, and provide inspiration for similar initiatives across Indonesia,” he concluded.
