Minister Suharso Affirms Indonesia’s Commitment to Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2025

Minister of National Development Planning Suharso Monoarfa emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This was explained by the Minister in a joint working meeting with Commission XI DPR RI, Minister of Finance, Governor of Bank Indonesia, OJK Board of Commissioners and Acting Head of BPS, Wednesday (05/06/2024).
The Minister explained that Indonesia is targeting a reduction in greenhouse gases of 38.6%. According to him, this target has been stated in the development targets of the Government Work Plan for 2025.
The Minister said, the intensity of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions is calculated based on a comparison of the actual emission value in a particular year with the output of a country’s economic activity in the same year.
“The reduction in GHG emission intensity represents Indonesia’s economic growth efforts which are carried out in line with efforts to reduce GHG emissions to realize the Sustainable Development Goals and achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060 or sooner,” said the Minister.
According to him, reducing the intensity of GHG emissions is realized by implementing ambitious Low Carbon Development policies in priority sectors such as energy, land, agriculture, waste and garbage.
From the energy sector, this is done by increasing energy efficiency in every sector, including household, commercial, industrial and transportation, by 3%, optimizing the installed capacity of New Renewable Energy (EBT) Power Plants by more than 90% and transitioning to electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel up to 11%.
From the land sector, this is done by carrying out reforestation of 125 thousand hectares per year, peat restoration of 200 to 250 thousand hectares per year, mangrove rehabilitation of 20 to 30 thousand hectares per year and reducing the rate of deforestation significantly.
From the agricultural aspect, this is done by providing 500 units of organic fertilizer management (UPPO) per year, adding irrigated rice fields and implementing a rice intensification system covering an area of 1 million hectares per year as well as applying low-emission seeds to 2 million hectares.
From the aspect of waste and waste, resource efficiency and waste management from upstream to downstream has reached 90% and industrial wastewater management has increased above 50%.
With these policies and concrete steps, the Minister hopes that Indonesia can continue to encourage sustainable economic growth and be resilient to climate change.
“We are confident that this effort will not only help Indonesia achieve its GHG emissions targets, but also improve community welfare and the overall quality of the environment,” he concluded.
