Kalimantan Regional Development Issues

The Kalimantan region, with its abundant natural wealth, faces a number of challenges that require serious attention in development efforts. Here are some crucial issues that need attention.
First, the dominance of the primary natural resources sector in the economy. Kalimantan’s economy is still dominated by the primary natural resources (SDA) sector, while diversification of economic activities is slow.
Efforts are needed to encourage economic diversification so that the region is more resilient to commodity price fluctuations and global market changes.
Second, intra-island inequality between provinces. The level of inequality between provinces in Kalimantan is still high. There is a need for equitable development between regions to ensure that the benefits of development can be enjoyed equally by all residents of Kalimantan.
Third, low compliance with Minimum Service Standards (SPM). The level of fulfillment of Minimum Service Standards (SPM) in Kalimantan is still low. There is a need to increase the provision of basic services such as education, health, clean water and sanitation to improve the quality of life of the population.
Fourth, the problem of state border areas. Problems in national border areas, including Outstanding Boundary Problems (OBP) and illegal crossings, are challenges for the government.
Cross-sector and cross-country coordination efforts are needed to overcome this problem and improve regional security.
Fifth, integrated regional infrastructure development. The integration of development between State Regional Infrastructure (IKN) and the surrounding buffer areas (partner areas) still needs to be strengthened. Synergy between central and regional infrastructure development needs to be improved to create sustainable economic growth.
Sixth, the risk of forest and land fires. The risk of forest and land fires in Kalimantan remains high, especially during the dry season. There needs to be more proactive efforts in preventing and controlling forest and land fires, as well as sustainable management of forests and land.
Seventh, preserving the environment and world lung function. Kalimantan has an important role in maintaining environmental sustainability as part of the Heart of Borneo.
Concrete efforts need to be made to preserve the environment and the function of the world’s lungs through sustainable management and protection of primary forests.
In overcoming these various challenges, commitment and cooperation between government, the private sector, society and international institutions is needed. Only with joint efforts, Kalimantan can achieve development that is sustainable, inclusive and resilient to global change.
