Indonesian Development Gallery: An Effort to Preserve the Nation’s Intellectual Assets
The Indonesian Development Gallery, which is a collection of national planning and development archives, is expected to be a means of preserving the nation’s intellectual assets. This was conveyed by Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Suharso Monoarfa at the launch of the archive display and seminar, which carries the theme of the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenad in the Cross Time and the Gait of Planning Institutions, Monday (30/09/2024).
The launch of the Bappenas archive display is designed as an educational platform that aims to introduce and educate the public about the history, development, and contribution of Bappenas in national development planning.
Featuring a timeline covering Bappenas’ journey to becoming the Ministry of National Development Planning, the event provides a clear picture of the institution’s important role in formulating development plans in Indonesia over time.
The launch of the archive display was done in an interesting way. In the launch area, the committee displayed a number of posters as well as interactive devices in the form of tabs containing Bappenas historical documents and archives that could be touched and explored by visitors.
In his remarks, the Minister reviewed the history of Bappenas’ name change. According to him, the forerunner of Bappenas was formed in the early days of independence on 19 January 1947 under the name Badan Perantjang Ekonomi.
“Furthermore, this institution changed its name to the Economic Strategy Thinking Committee on 12 April 1947. One of the important products produced was a document entitled Basic Principles of the Plan to Regulate the Indonesian Economy,” said the Minister.
“The Economic Strategy Thinking Committee then changed its name to the State Aid Council in 1953. In 1956, this institution again changed its name to the Economic and Planning Council. Furthermore, in 1957, the name of this institution was changed again to the Economic and Development Council. In 1960, it changed its name to the National Drafting Council. At that time, the National Drafting Council succeeded in drafting the National Universal Development Plan (PNSB), which is a development plan for an eight-year period,” he added.
This institution was later changed to the National Development Planning Agency with the issuance of Presidential Decree No. 12/1963 concerning the National Development Planning Agency.
The Minister explained that the Indonesian Development Gallery can be reached more widely by the public, thus increasing public awareness to play a role and be involved in the success of the nation’s development sustainability.
According to him, other countries that have also carried out similar activities include Singapore with the National Museum of Singapore and Singapore City Gallery, Korea with the National Museum of Korea, and Dubai with the Dubai Museum of the Future.
“The Indonesian Development Gallery will concretely be the only museum in Indonesia that represents the past, present and future of Indonesia’s development,” he concluded.
