Global Power Index (GPI) Ranking in 2023 in Southeast Asia
In 2023, Indonesia ranked 34th in the Global Power Index (GPI), making it the third strongest country in Southeast Asia. This position reflects Indonesia’s great potential in the global power map, although it still faces various challenges to achieve a higher ranking.
In first place in Southeast Asia, Singapore leads strongly, ranking 4th in the world. Singapore’s success is not surprising, considering that this country has long been known as a global financial and trade center, and has a modern and sophisticated military.
Malaysia, in second place in Southeast Asia, also shows significant strength by ranking 16th in the world. Malaysia continues to strive to strengthen its strategic position through sustainable economic development and military modernization.
One level below Indonesia is Thailand, which ranks 41st in the world. Thailand continues to develop its capabilities in various aspects, including economy and defense, to improve its position at the global level.
Vietnam ranks fifth in Southeast Asia and is ranked 69th in the world GPI. Although its global ranking is still far below its neighbors, Vietnam has shown rapid progress in economic development and military strengthening.
In sixth place is the Philippines, which is ranked 74th in the global GPI. The Philippines still faces various internal challenges that hinder significant improvements in its power index.
Indonesia, ranked 34th globally, has set an ambitious target of being ranked 15th in the GPI by 2045, as stated in the National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045.
This target reflects Indonesia’s grand vision to increase its power and influence on the global stage. To achieve this position, Indonesia needs to overtake 19 countries in the next two decades. This effort requires significant improvements in various sectors, including the economy, military, technology, and diplomacy.
To realize this target, Indonesia must focus on several strategies and commit to realizing these strategies.
With the right commitment and strategy, Indonesia has great potential to achieve its ambitious target and become one of the strongest countries in the world. Ranking 15th in the Global Power Index by 2045 is not impossible, as long as all parties work together to make it happen.
