Geopolitical Mitigation Strategy: Maintaining National Stability Amid Global Uncertainty
The world is always under tension caused by ever-changing geopolitical pressures. Throughout history, significant political, economic and social events have often changed the course of history, bringing far-reaching impacts to regional and global stability.
Examples such as Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990, the Gulf war in 1991, 9/11 in the United States, the Iraq war in 2003, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 illustrate how one action can change the geopolitical map and affect the foreign and security policies of countries around the world.
Geopolitical pressures not only impact the countries directly involved, but also have consequences far beyond their borders.
For countries like Indonesia, located in the strategic Southeast Asia region, the ability to anticipate and respond to geopolitical pressures is critical. In this context, geopolitical mitigation is key to maintaining national stability and security.
Geopolitical mitigation refers to a country’s ability to reduce or manage the negative impact of destabilising geopolitical events.
This process involves various strategies, including effective diplomacy, international cooperation, strengthening national defence, and economic and social preparedness for crises. In the face of geopolitical uncertainty, it is important for Indonesia to have an integrated and comprehensive mitigation plan.
Lessons from history show that countries that have good mitigation power tend to be better able to survive and recover from the negative impacts of geopolitical events. Therefore, investment in mitigation capacity should be a priority for Indonesia.
This includes strengthening diplomatic relations with other countries, active participation in international organisations, as well as the enforcement of domestic policies that support economic and social resilience.
In addition, increasing public awareness and preparedness in the face of crisis is also an important aspect of mitigation. Education and training on emergency response, as well as the development of infrastructure that supports resilience, will strengthen the foundation of society in facing geopolitical challenges.
By strengthening these mitigation strategies, Indonesia will not only be better prepared for the uncertainties posed by future geopolitical events, but also able to maintain sustainable economic stability.
Maintained national stability is an important condition for achieving long-term development goals, making Indonesia more resilient in the face of global challenges.
In order to build a strong and resilient nation, learning from past geopolitical events should be the foundation for developing adaptive mitigation strategies. Through these measures, Indonesia can face geopolitical challenges with more confidence and ensure security and prosperity for future generations.
